What is the difference between chilled and long life Oatly?

Hi, could you explain why some Oatly is chilled and some is long life? And what is the difference between Barista and chilled whole? I’ve read both ingredients and they seem to be the same. Thanks

  • Hi Lorna,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us.

Of course I can! Here we go; Our oat drinks with a flat top carton, like this one, are long-life products. They can be stored in room temperature for up to one year before they're opened. The oat drinks in cartons with a pointy top, like this one, are our chilled oat drinks, meaning they have to be stored in the fridge both before and after opening. So the difference between the two types of products is in the construction of the carton. The long-life cartons have a thin aluminium layer in the construction while the chilled ones don't. The drinks inside are more or less the same. We started with our long life cartons but decided to offer a chilled version too, as it could be placed in the dairy section together with all the cow's milk. We thought it would introduce more consumers to the plant-based options and making their switch a little bit easier, we were right! So today we offer both these two types of cartons, depending on how the consumer prefer to store and use our products.

One important thing to mention is that our regular long-life oat drink and organic oat drinks do not contain dipotassium phosphate, which is an acidity regulator that prevents the drink from separating/curdling in warm drinks like coffee or tea. Our chilled drinks including the Barista Edition all have this acidity regulator, making them ideal for use with coffee and tea.

I agree with you that our Barista Edition is very similar to our Oat Drink Whole. There's small differences in there, like the fat content. If you try them side by side, you might notice it. But overall, the biggest difference is the carton.

Holy oats, that's a long answer. I hope you find it helpful though. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to write back.

Stay safe and have an oatsome weekend!

    All the best,

Does this mean the Barista Edition should be kept chilled?

Or more generally - do the "chilled" products actually need to be chilled?

I'm less physically abled, so I like to buy in bulk, and don't have the fridge space for all the Oat Milk Whole I'd like to buy!

  • Hi again Adam,

Sorry for the delayed answer! I work at the Swedish office but step in and help the UK team from time to time..

Here we go: No, the Barista Edition does not have to be kept chilled as long as it hasn't been opened. The rule of thumb is: Pointy top = Needs to be kept chilled. All the chilled products need to be kept chilled due to the construction of the carton. It sounds like your best option would be to get the Barista Edition then, as it is almost identical to the Oat Drink Whole except that you don't have to store it in the fridge!

    Have a nice day!

    All the best,
