Sulphites

I am extremely sensitive to sulphites.  So sensitive, in fact, that I react to foods with < 10 ppm sulphites.

I had a reaction to Oatly, so I am wondering if sulphites are used or introduced at any point in your process? For example, is the water you soak the oats in sulphited or are the enzymes you use stabilised with sulphites? Do oats contain or produce natural sulphites? Or are there any other sources?

If the answer is "No", can you please confirm that Oatly is 0 ppm sulphites?

Thanks!

  • Hi there,

I'm so sorry to hear you had a reaction to our product, and I hope you're okay now?

Could you please let us know which product this was? You'll find these all listed here: https://www.oatly.com/uk/products.

Sulphite is one of the 14 major allergens that we are by law required to clearly highlight on our packages. If it's not highlighted (underlined) in the ingredient list on the side of our packaging, we can guarantee that there is no sulphur dioxide or sulphites at concentrations of more than 10mg/kg or 10mg/litre in the product. As you said, you react to <10 ppm sulphites so this wouldn't be labelled on our product if that amount was present. I will speak to our team about your questions regarding the water, oats and any possible sources of sulphites to find out if it's at all possible for them to be present in quantities of <10 ppm.

I'll message you as soon as I have an answer.

  • Hi again,

I'm currently discussing your question about sulphites with our Quality team, and they are wondering which product you reacted to as we have a lot of products containing different ingredients produced in different production sites.

Thanks so much for your help!

    All the best,
    Sophie
  • Thanks for looking into it!  It was the Oatly Oat Drink Whole.  While you are looking into it, can you please also ask about the whippable creamy oat.

Thanks very much - I really appreciate it!
